The day in sidewalk futility

Today, while waiting at a stop light, I watched a man outside of Bauhaus attempting to staple poster to a pole. A metal pole. Poor guy, just banging away at that metal pole. Initially my thought was to give him the benefit of the doubt, after all those poles are always plastered with the bills of events past which could make determining what substrate one is dealing with difficult, and my vantage as driver might have given me an advantage at making that determination. Or perhaps he had some sort of super-staples capable of penetrating metal. But as I watched him hopelessly bludgeon the pole, then examine his stapler to see if it's jammed, then continue to wale away, I simply thought that for someone who makes a living by attaching paper to poles, his ability to discern a metal pole from a wooden one is pathetically under-honed.

Have you seen the outside?! Snow accumulation in early December, that doesn't happen here!

This winter has me thinking about the past; about where I've been and where I am now. This time last year was a cold time for myself, both figuratively and literally. I make the following statements with some trepidation & with the risk of sounding overly dramatic, but it really provides an accurate summation of how I was feeling that the time. My spirit was broken, as was my central heating. I had really never experienced such a cold winter in my life, it being the first I had really spent sans the comfort or structure of a familial or academic institution. Without delving into too much detail, I can say there was a significant feeling of malaise in both my personal and "professional" life. Some nights I would wake up in my apartment and sit upright in my bed, and it would be so cold I could see my breath. I may have been more upset about the situation had not the state of my apartment been such a strikingly accurate allegory of my life at large at the time.

Fast forward a year. Events in my life are definitely trending in a more sanguine direction. I have a "good" job that is nice and "steady". I've been engaging in "healthier" relationships. But I still maintain a "cynical as best" mindset. Call it a defense mechanism I guess. The winter is still young. Maybe in a year I can write about how this was my warmest winter on record.

I would love to elaborate more, but my brain cells are currently ensconced within 6 tallboys worth of Rainier beerz.

Well.

I'm still alive. Being a "responsible adult". Daily grinding, weekend warrior-ing, cyclical living. Ugh.

I feel like I've fallen off of the face of the earth, more so than I typically tend to do anyways. Mostly because I moved so much closer the actual edge of the earth (aka Magnolia). I've fallen off the face of the Earth and become the Haley's Comet of friends.

What else...well, I've resolved to do at least one thing in the near future, and that is head out to one of these:

Yes, a pumpkin patch.Why, you may ask, of all things, why is this a priority? Well besides the seasonal implications, it recently dawned on me that the entirety of my pumpkin-purchasing career has solely been from ye old local grocery outlet. Not once in my life have I gone out to a pumpkin patch and picked a pumpkin straight off the vine (I can only assume that's how you do it anyways, since I have, you know, never actually been). And for whatever reason, this struck me as odd, and I said to myself: "Self.... NAY, not this year! This year I crusade against thy grocery store. I will commune with nature! And she will guide me to the perfect pumpkin to procure...So, I'm going to go do that.

Oh remember this thing J.R.?!

I am going to use this time to regail anyone reading with a story about bananas.

So I ate a banana, ohhh about two weeks ago. Now this may not seem like a big deal to most, but anyone who has any idea of my dietary background knows that I have had a life-long aversion towards banana. Like I completely abhorred the fact that bananas are a thing that exists. Being all mushy and oddly textured and slimy and weird tasting. I seriously could not have a banana break the place of my mouth without my gag reflex being stimulated. So suffice it to say, I've gone twenty three years of my life without having eating one single solitary banana.

But one day something came over me. I was over at Chris, Tyler and Kit's house, and I had stayed the night after the KOB show and was in the kitchen eating breakfast with Chris the next morning. Maybe it was because the day before the only things I had eaten were some miscellaneous veggies and one slice of pizza. Or maybe it was something more profound; my body manifesting a yearning for change via this craving for something once so loathed. At any rate, Chris offered to me this contentious fruit, and initially I declined. I think I even told him a bit about how I hated bananas and had never eaten one in my life. I ate some bread, drank some tea, shot the breeze. And right about that time, for some reason, it just seemed like a good idea to eat a banana. And so I did. You can only imagine how tentative the first few bites were, if I wasn't so hungry I probably would have gagged. But you know what? It really wasn't that bad. Actually, it was pretty good. I, J.R. Tripp, am willing to swallow my pride and admit to having enjoyed eating a banana.

So I eat bananas now. In fact I eat one almost every day now! Just on weekdays. When I am waiting for the bus. Which I ride frequently.

"Oh wait J.R., why do you ride the bus so much, I thought you had a car?"

"You are right, I had a car"

But enough about all that, for now...

I'm totally blogging in a cafe, on my Mac G4 Powerbook, listening to my ipod, and drinking decaf earl grey tea....isn't that just excruciatingly fucking hip?!?! Good thing I can acknowledge this situation’s triteness, otherwise I might feel kinda silly or something.

So I drove through some of the shity shity shity awful weather this weekend, and I can say with confidence that through it all, me and the S.S. Lumina made mother nature our bitch. Fucking quote that shit. No amounts of pissing rain, treacherously slippery snow and ice, or gail-force winds are going to keep me from where I'm fucking going. All that, and the most important/noteworthy thing I did all weekend was drink beer out of a glass boot, but that's fucking cool though RIGHT?!

Also, because I like to liken myself to a teen-heartthrob who has throngs of fans who find it important to know insignificant and unimportant factoids about some stranger’s life, here's a short rundown of things I currently am backing:
